And...begin Joe Esposito soundtrack showcase...NOW!

Throughout fiction (and some nonfiction), there are  accounts of a promised or chosen one that will either show up to solve all the problems, or enter and cause all the problems.  I like them either way.  I noticed something while researching this, and it’s interesting.  In most of the “chosen ones” that I was able to find, they either weren’t the actual ones people were looking for, or they accomplished their prophecies through unexpected means.  (more…)

Bram Stoker’s Overblown Dracula

It's good to be the Count.

It's good to be the Count.

I get what Francis Ford Coppola was trying to do with Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  I really do.  I bet he wishes it’d worked better.  Or, at least he’d gotten some actors that knew how to fake a decent English accent.  Clearly, he was trying to use a wide variety of camera shots and special effects across the spectrum of film history.  I liken it to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that has too much of one of the elements.  It looks good, it should taste good, and yet, the imbalance throws off the entire proceedings. The Paranormal Blair Witch Activity Project

I told them I wouldn't stick around for pillow talk. Worst...Threeway...Ever!

As I pointed out in the beginning of the month with my review of The Blair Witch Project, environment is everything when watching a film.  Being one of the better reviewed films of the year, as well as being touted as “the scariest movie ever”, I decided, against my better judgement, to give Paranormal Activity a watch.  It accomplishes something that The Blair Witch just couldn’t.  I have a feeling that this one will remain a bit frightening out of the theater as well as in it. David Naughton keeps his pimp hand strong.

Werewolves.  They sure kick ass!  At least when they’re big hulking ravenous monsters that leave little of their victims left but cold entrails.  Unfortunately for David Naughton in An American Werewolf in London, killing people doesn’t mean they’re out of your life forever. (more…)

Hot Nerd Crush #3: Tricia Helfer

Yeah, I had something witty to say...but I forgot. Just keep looking at her.

Yeah, I had something witty to say...but I forgot. Just keep looking at her.

We’re going to try a new format with this weekly spot here on ManWithPez.  Mostly because it takes so damn long to write out what is essentially a report on hot men and women.  So, we’re going straight to the heart of the matter instead of covering so much of their life that you can find here and there and concentrate more on why I think they’re hot.  So, with further adieu, here’s Hot Nerd Crush #3:  Tricia Helfer! Candyman, Candyman, Candyma…I Can’t Do It!

Candyman tries out for Westside Story.

Candyman tries out for Westside Story.

The best iteration on the “Bloody Mary” urban legend is of course, Candyman.  I’m uncertain, but I think it might be the best meditation on the mirror generated villain. (Take THAT Boogeyman et. al., Mirrors, etc…)  Now, when I make a top ten horror film list(I’m sure you’ve all done this, yeah?) Candyman always makes it.  For one, I found it original, genuinely frightening, gory, and spellbinding.  For a look on how the generation of an urban legend can be batshit crazy, read on. (more…)

I think we've found our next christmas card picture!

I think we've found our next christmas card picture!

It’s funny how often I get asked this, which is almost never, but my favorite vampire film of all time is Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark.  Key for me in this movie is the villains, played gleeishly by Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, Joshua Miller, and best of all Bill Paxton! (more…)

The Hills Have Ghosts!

Don't let the horrors of dandruff ruin your social occasion.

Don't let the horrors of dandruff ruin your social occasion.

Alright, I’ve been waiting to do this one for awhile, because I love this movie!

The House on Haunted Hill (The original, please!  Not that other pieceashit!) managed to scare the crap out of me before the credits rolled, and I’ll tell you why.  When my copy of the DVD came on, the screen was dark.  No writing, nothing.  I thought maybe I was missing some voiceover or another so I jacked the volume on my stereo up, thinking “Goddamn cheap DVD…worst audio ever!”  Boy, was I ever wrong.  After ten seconds of blank screen and upturned volume, a woman begins to scream her fucking head off!  At top volume, in the middle of the night, that’s the last thing you want to hear(You know…if you’re alone, heh).  Of course, I fell down rushing to the stereo, the remote control in my hand forgotten out of sheer panic.  Let me tell you…just set the tone for the rest of the movie that much better. So annoyed, that he literally ate his words.

So annoyed, that he literally ate his words.

I’m a pretty annoying person, as I’ve been told over the years.  Why not let that work for me in the way of writing a list to help you, the discerning, internet reading public(discerning enough to come here, anyways) pester and annoy those around you?  Ready…Let’s get started! (more…)
