It's the most wonderful time of the year!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Anyone who’s known me for the last ten years or more can tell you that on Halloween, I watch three films.  Anyone who’s known me for five years or less can tell you that I try to watch a horror film everyday for the month of October. This list is made fresh every year, the only ones not changing are the ones on Halloween proper.  Occasionally, I get burned out, but I press through, because what I watch on Halloween gives me such a happy.  Without further boring words, here’s the schedule this year:

October 1st:  The Blair Witch Project

October 2nd:  Prince of Darkness

October 3rd:  Sleepwalkers

October 4th:  A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon)

October 6th:  Child’s Play

October 7th:  Stephen King’s Silver Bullet

October 8th:  Popcorn

October 9th:  The Evil Dead

October 10th:  Evil Dead 2:  Dead by Dawn

October 11th:  Carnival of Souls

October 12th:  The Ring

October 13th:  Friday the 13th

October 15th:  From Hell

October 16th:  Innocent Blood

October 18th:  The Wolf Man

October 19th:  Horror of Dracula

October 20th:  The Fog

October 21st:  Interview With The Vampire

October 22nd:  The Devil’s Backbone (El Espinazo del Diablo)

October 23rd:  House on Haunted Hill

October 24th:  Near Dark

October 25th:  Candyman

October 26th:  An American Werewolf in London

October 27th:  Bram Stoker’s Dracula

October 28th:  Halloween

October 29th:  Halloween 2

October 30th:  H2O

October 31st!:  Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; Arsenic and Old Lace; Fright Night

Now, I know these are not necessarily the films you might pick.  I do own better horror, and this list represents roughly 1/3 of what I own in the genre.  There are even some on this list that this time of the year is the ONLY time they get watched around here.  The reasons for my picks can really be summed up on Halloween itself.  I’ve loved The Legend of Sleepy Hollow ever since I was first shown it when I was 8 years old.  I love the songs, and it has some of the best animation Disney made from back in the day.  Also, as a child, the ending really messed me up.  Arsenic and Old Lace isn’t a horror film, it’s a comedy, but once you get the idea of what’s going on in the movie…well, suffice it to say I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t tried to remake it with a darker edge (Please, please don’t do that, Hollywood…please!).  And Fright Night, my personal favorite horror film.  Charismatic villain, underdog good guys, down to the wire battles of good and evil, corruption, seduction, cheesy 80s hair and clothes!  What’s not to love here?  It is, for my money, the most entertaining horror film ever made, and has been since I was 10 years old.  It will ever remain so.

So, there’s my picks.  I know I left a few off, but this endeavour doesn’t have to just be me.  Raid your own shelves, get down to the rental place, spank netflix!  I have a blast every year doing this, and you can too!

I can’t find any fault with that list, dude. Very few would I leave off, and, If I were to add anything, it’d be Night ‘68, Dawn ‘78, and a few of the old Universal goodies.
